High Electricity Bill? | Causes & What to Check

A suddenly high electricity bill does not necessarily mean that your TNB meter is faulty. An increase may occur when electricity consumption rises, appliances are used for longer periods or certain appliances are no longer operating efficiently.

Before reaching a conclusion, compare your consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh), the billing period and your household usage pattern. A systematic check can help distinguish between actual consumption, an appliance problem, internal wiring and an issue that should be referred to TNB.

Why Can an Electricity Bill Become Higher?

The bill amount is influenced by energy consumption, operating hours, the type of appliances used and the applicable billing structure. Comparing only the amount in Ringgit may not reveal the actual cause.

Conditions that can increase electricity consumption include:

  • Using an air conditioner for longer periods or at a lower temperature
  • Using a water heater more frequently
  • A refrigerator operating continuously
  • A water pump starting frequently because of a leak or control problem
  • Adding a dryer, oven or another high-powered appliance
  • An increase in the number of occupants or activities at home
  • Older appliances becoming less efficient
  • A billing period that differs from the previous month

TNB also explains that electricity consumption may increase when the number, capacity and operating hours of electrical appliances increase. Faulty appliances, such as refrigerators with thermostat, refrigerant or door-seal problems, may also operate inefficiently.

Compare kWh, Not Only the Bill Amount

kWh represents the amount of electrical energy consumed. To determine whether your consumption has genuinely increased, compare the current kWh reading with several previous bills.

When comparing your bills, check:

  • The total kWh recorded each month
  • The number of days in each billing period
  • Whether the reading is actual or estimated
  • The meter-reading date
  • Any adjustment or additional charge shown
  • Changes in the use of appliances at home

If the amount in Ringgit increases while the kWh usage remains similar, check the billing period and breakdown of charges. If the kWh also increases significantly, focus on changes in your usage pattern and the condition of your appliances.

How to Estimate Appliance Consumption

The electricity consumption of an appliance can be estimated using its power rating and operating time.

Energy consumption in kWh = Power (Watts) × Hours used × Number of days ÷ 1,000

For example, a high-powered appliance used for several hours every day can have a greater effect on monthly consumption than a low-powered appliance used briefly.

This calculation provides an estimate. Actual consumption may vary when an appliance has a thermostat, inverter, motor, standby mode or automatic operating cycle.

You can use the official myTNB Home Energy Calculator to estimate consumption based on different appliances.

Appliances That May Need to Be Checked

Air conditioner

An air conditioner may contribute to higher consumption when it is used for longer periods, set to a very low temperature, has a dirty filter or is no longer operating efficiently.

Refrigerator and freezer

A door that does not close properly, a damaged seal, a thermostat problem or insufficient ventilation may cause the compressor to operate for longer periods.

Water heater

A water heater has a relatively high power demand while operating. The frequency and duration of use can make a noticeable difference to monthly consumption.

Water pump

A pump that starts frequently without clear water usage may indicate a plumbing leak, pressure-switch problem or fault in the pump system.

Older or faulty appliances

A faulty motor, thermostat, compressor or heating component may cause an appliance to operate longer or fail to stop as expected.

How to Check the Cause of a High Electricity Bill

  1. Compare the kWh usage shown on several monthly bills.
  2. Check the number of days in each billing period.
  3. List any new appliances or changes in usage.
  4. Check the air conditioner, refrigerator, freezer, pump and water heater.
  5. Identify appliances that operate longer than usual.
  6. Review myTNB usage data if the property has a smart meter.
  7. Arrange an inspection if the increase cannot be explained.

If a smart meter has been installed, daily and monthly consumption may be monitored through myTNB. Usage spikes on a particular day or at a particular time can help identify changes in consumption.

More information about usage monitoring is available on the official myTNB Smart Meter page.

Can Faulty Wiring Cause a High Electricity Bill?

A wiring fault should not automatically be assumed to be the cause. However, a damaged connection, leakage current, faulty appliance or circuit that is not operating correctly may require inspection when unusual signs are present.

Arrange an inspection if you notice:

  • An MCB or RCCB that trips repeatedly
  • A socket, switch or DB box that feels unusually hot
  • A burning smell or signs of overheating
  • Appliances switching on and off unexpectedly
  • A pump or motor operating continuously
  • Higher consumption despite no clear change in household usage

An inspection may cover the DB box, circuit current, connections, cables and suspected appliances. Appropriate testing equipment should be used instead of touching exposed electrical components.

Electrical wiring and DB box inspection after an electricity bill increase

When Should You Contact TNB?

Contact TNB when your enquiry involves the meter reading, billing-reading status, charge adjustments, a suspected meter fault or a difference that cannot be explained by your consumption records.

Prepare your account number, current bill, previous bills, a photograph of the meter display taken from a safe distance and a brief description of the change.

If the display is blank, physically damaged or showing an unusual condition, read our guide about a faulty TNB meter. Do not open the meter cover, seal or connection yourself.

When Should You Contact an Electrical Contractor?

An electrical contractor may be required when the suspected problem is located after the meter, including the DB box, circuit, cable, connection or electrical appliance inside the property.

An electrical contractor does not determine whether TNB has calculated a bill correctly. The purpose of the inspection is to identify problems in the consumer’s installation that may cause abnormal operation or an electrical safety risk.

For problems involving internal wiring, circuits or the DB box, see our electrical troubleshooting service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a high bill mean that the TNB meter is faulty?

Not necessarily. An increase is more commonly associated with changes in consumption, the billing period, high-powered appliances or inefficient equipment. TNB must determine whether the meter requires inspection.

Why has my bill increased when I have not added new appliances?

Existing appliances may be used for longer periods, hot weather may increase air-conditioner usage, or an appliance such as a refrigerator or pump may be operating more frequently because of a fault.

Can an electrical contractor check the cause of high consumption?

A contractor can inspect the installation after the meter, including the DB box, circuits and suspected appliances. Questions about meter readings and billing charges should be submitted to TNB.

Does all the wiring need to be replaced?

No. Rewiring should only be considered when an inspection confirms that the condition of the wiring requires it. A high electricity bill alone is not evidence that all wiring must be replaced.

Still Not Sure Why Your Bill Has Increased?

We can inspect the DB box, electrical circuits and suspected appliances when consumption increases without a clear explanation.
