What to Prepare Before Changing from Single Phase to Three Phase?

What needs to be prepared before changing an electricity supply from Single Phase to Three Phase?

The preparation involves more than replacing the electricity meter. The meter panel, main supply cable, DB box, earthing system and total electrical load should be assessed to determine the work required.

Check Whether Three-Phase Supply Is Required

A Three-Phase supply may be considered when electricity usage increases or the existing Single-Phase supply is no longer suitable for the requirements of the premises.

Electrical demand may increase after adding more air conditioners, water heaters, high-powered kitchen appliances, machinery, an EV charger or commercial equipment.

However, having several electrical appliances does not automatically mean that the supply must be changed to Three Phase. The total load and usage pattern should be assessed first.

For a clearer comparison, read our guide to Single Phase and Three Phase electricity.

Meter Panel Inspection

The existing meter panel should be inspected to determine whether its position, size and installation are suitable for a Three-Phase supply.

A Three-Phase meter panel uses a different arrangement of the meter, cut-out fuses, neutral link and cables compared with a Single-Phase installation. The existing panel may therefore need to be replaced or prepared again, depending on its condition.

The inspection may include:

  • Condition of the meter board or enclosure
  • Space for the Three-Phase meter and accessories
  • Incoming and outgoing cable routes
  • Protection against weather and physical damage
  • Access required for installation work

For more information, refer to our guide on TNB meter panel position and preparation.

Cable from the Meter Panel to the DB Box

The main cable used for the existing Single-Phase supply may not be suitable for a Three-Phase system. Its size, type, number of conductors and physical condition should be checked before work begins.

The cable route between the meter panel and DB box should also be identified. If the existing cable cannot be reused, a new route may be required through conduit, casing, trunking or an existing cable space.

The cable size should not be selected based only on the type of meter. Electrical load, cable distance, installation method and circuit protection should also be considered.

DB Box for Three-Phase Supply

The DB box distributes the electricity supply to the individual circuits throughout a home or premises.

When the supply is changed to Three Phase, the DB box must have a suitable arrangement for receiving and distributing all three phases. The main switch, RCCB, MCBs and circuit distribution should be checked to ensure that the installation is suitable for the new supply.

The DB box assessment may include:

  • DB box size and available space
  • Main switch for Three-Phase supply
  • RCCB and earth-leakage protection
  • MCBs for the final circuits
  • Condition of the neutral bar and earth bar
  • Distribution of electrical load between phases
  • Condition of existing cables and connections

The complete DB box does not necessarily need to be replaced in every situation. The decision depends on its type, capacity, condition and suitability for a Three-Phase supply.

Earthing System Assessment

The earthing system provides a path for fault current and allows the protective devices to operate when an electrical leakage occurs.

Before changing the electricity supply, the earth conductor, connection to the earth bar and the existing earthing system should be inspected. Testing may be carried out to assess the condition of the earthing system at the premises.

If the test result or installation condition is unsuitable, improvement work may be required before the system is used with the new electricity supply.

Electrical Load Distribution

One purpose of a Three-Phase system is to distribute the electrical load across the three phases.

Circuits for air conditioners, socket outlets, water heaters, lighting, machinery and other equipment should be arranged according to the requirements of the premises. Poor distribution may cause one phase to carry a higher load than the others.

The electrical contractor should therefore assess the number of circuits, type of equipment and estimated usage before determining the load distribution within the DB box.

Does All the Wiring Need to Be Replaced?

Not necessarily. Changing to a Three-Phase supply does not automatically mean that all wiring throughout the home or premises must be replaced.

The existing wiring can be inspected to assess the insulation condition, cable size, circuit protection and suitability for the current electrical usage.

If damaged cables, unsafe connections, unsuitable protection or other installation problems are found, repairs or replacements may only be required for the affected sections.

Inspection Before Work Begins

A site inspection helps determine the actual work required before the electricity supply is changed.

Every property has a different installation. Some premises may only require work on the meter panel and DB box, while others may also require a new main cable, cable route, earthing work or additional modifications.

Once the installation condition has been identified, the technical work and electricity-supply upgrade arrangements can be planned more accurately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Single-Phase meter panel be used for a Three-Phase meter?

It depends on the type, size and arrangement of the existing panel. The panel should be inspected to determine whether it can be modified or needs to be replaced.

Must the DB box be replaced for a Three-Phase supply?

Not in every situation. However, the DB box must have sufficient space and a suitable arrangement of protective devices for receiving and distributing a Three-Phase supply.

Does all the wiring in the property need to be replaced?

Not necessarily. The existing wiring should be inspected, and only sections that are damaged, unsuitable or unsafe may require repair or replacement.

Why does the electrical load need to be calculated?

The load assessment helps determine whether a Three-Phase supply is required and supports the correct planning of the supply cable, DB box and circuit distribution.

Who should inspect the installation before the supply is changed?

The inspection and related electrical work should be carried out by a registered electrical contractor with the appropriate competency for the installation scope.
