Water Heater Keeps Tripping | Wiring or Unit Fault?

Does your water heater keep tripping when it is switched on or after operating for a few minutes?

The problem may involve the water heater unit, wiring, electrical connections, isolator or a protection device inside the DB box. The timing of the incident and the device that trips can help identify which parts need to be inspected.

Do not repeatedly switch the water heater back on without identifying the cause. As the unit operates in an area exposed to water and moisture, any electrical problem should be taken seriously.

Water heater causing the MCB or RCCB to trip

Why Does the Water Heater Cause a Trip?

A water heater uses a relatively high electrical load and normally requires a circuit, cable, switch or isolator and protection suitable for the capacity of the unit.

When an overcurrent, short circuit or leakage current occurs, a protection device may disconnect the supply. This helps reduce the risk of equipment damage, electric shock or fire.

Possible causes that may need to be checked include:

  • An internal problem with the water heater unit.
  • Leakage current to earth.
  • A cable or circuit that is unsuitable for the load.
  • Loose or overheated terminal connections.
  • A faulty water heater isolator or switch.
  • A problem with the MCB, RCCB or RCBO.
  • Wiring exposed to water or damaged insulation.
  • A water heater circuit shared with other loads.

If the electricity also trips when other appliances are used, refer to our guide on why home electricity keeps tripping for problems that may involve the wider electrical installation.

Which Protection Device Is Tripping?

Identify the device that has disconnected without removing the internal DB box cover or touching any wiring. The type of device that trips may provide an initial indication, but testing is still required to confirm the actual cause.

Water Heater MCB Trips

An MCB protects a circuit against overcurrent and short-circuit conditions. If the water heater MCB trips, the problem may involve the load, cable, connection, protection rating or the unit itself.

Do not immediately replace the MCB with one of a higher rating. The MCB rating must be suitable for the cable capacity, circuit design and equipment requirements.

RCCB or RCBO Trips

An RCCB may operate when leakage current causes an imbalance between the outgoing and returning current. An RCBO combines residual-current protection with overcurrent protection for the relevant circuit.

If the RCCB or RCBO trips whenever the water heater is used, the inspection may need to cover the unit, wiring, earthing connections and areas exposed to moisture.

For an explanation of the different protection devices, refer to our guide on MCB, RCCB and RCBO differences.

Protection Inside the Water Heater Trips

Some water heaters have internal protection or safety-related controls on the unit. If the internal protection operates, the condition of the unit and its connected electrical supply should be checked.

Do not bypass, restrain or modify any protection mechanism to keep the water heater operating.

Water Heater Trips Immediately After Switching On

If the trip occurs immediately after the switch or isolator is turned on, possible causes include a short circuit, damaged cable, incorrect connection, moisture or an electrical fault inside the unit.

This can also happen after a new unit is installed if the connection, circuit or protection is unsuitable for the installation requirements.

Switch off the water heater and do not attempt to restart it repeatedly. An immediate trip requires inspection before the unit is used again.

Water Heater Trips After a Few Minutes

If the water heater operates before tripping after several minutes, the problem may only appear when the unit carries a continuous load or when a poor connection begins to overheat.

Possible causes that may need to be checked include:

  • Loose terminals or electrical connections.
  • A cable or circuit unsuitable for the load.
  • An MCB that develops a problem while carrying current.
  • An isolator or switch that becomes too hot.
  • A water heater component drawing abnormal current.
  • Leakage current appearing when the heating element operates.

The time taken before the trip occurs is not enough to determine the cause. Measurements and testing are required to distinguish an equipment fault from an electrical installation problem.

Could the Problem Come From the Wiring?

The wiring may be involved if there is a damaged cable, poor connection, unsuitable cable size, overheating or moisture along the wiring route.

Warning signs that can be observed without opening the wiring include:

  • The water heater isolator or switch feels unusually hot.
  • There is a burning smell near the switch or unit.
  • The isolator surface is discoloured or melted.
  • The water heater trips when the switch is operated.
  • The problem started after renovation or drilling work.
  • The electrical supply switches on and off unexpectedly.

Do not open the isolator, DB box or water heater connections yourself. These parts may remain electrically live even when the unit is not operating.

Could the Water Heater Unit Be Faulty?

The water heater may be responsible if there is a problem with the heating element, pump, internal connection, built-in protection or another electrical component.

An electrical contractor can inspect the supply, circuit, isolator, wiring and related protection devices. If testing shows that the fault is inside the unit, the repair should be referred to a water heater technician or the manufacturer’s service centre.

The unit should not be replaced solely because it causes a trip without first checking the condition of the electrical supply.

What Can Be Checked Safely?

A few basic observations can be made without opening equipment or touching electrical parts:

  • Identify whether the MCB, RCCB, RCBO or internal unit protection has tripped.
  • Observe whether the trip occurs immediately or after several minutes.
  • Check for a burning smell, unusual sound or signs of overheating.
  • Check whether water is leaking near the unit, switch or isolator.
  • Record the water heater model and capacity.
  • Determine whether the problem started after installation or unit replacement.

Do not remove the unit cover, touch cables, test the installation by hand or repeatedly reset the protection device.

Electrical contractor inspecting the wiring and electrical supply for a water heater

What Will an Electrical Contractor Check?

The inspection scope depends on the symptoms, type of unit and installation condition. Parts that may be checked include:

  • The incoming supply to the water heater circuit.
  • The condition of the related MCB, RCCB or RCBO.
  • The cable size and condition.
  • The water heater switch or isolator.
  • Accessible terminal connections.
  • The relevant earthing and continuity.
  • Signs of overheating, burning or damaged insulation.
  • Leakage current and insulation resistance when required.

The inspection helps determine whether the problem can be resolved within the wiring or electrical protection, or whether it needs to be referred to a water heater technician.

If fault detection is required, refer to our electrical troubleshooting service for more information.

When Is New Wiring or a New Point Required?

New wiring or a new electrical point may be required when the existing circuit is unsuitable, the cable is damaged, the installation location changes or a replacement unit has different installation requirements.

The decision should not be based on the unit capacity alone. The cable route, installation method, DB box condition and manufacturer’s instructions must also be considered.

For a new unit installation together with the required point or wiring, refer to our water heater installation service.

Warning Signs That Need Immediate Attention

Stop using the water heater and arrange an inspection if there is:

  • A burning smell or smoke.
  • Sparking at the switch, isolator or unit.
  • An isolator that is extremely hot or discoloured.
  • A shock or tingling sensation when touching the pipe, shower head or unit.
  • Water leaking into an electrical section.
  • An MCB, RCCB or RCBO that continues to trip after being reset.
  • An unusual sound from the unit or electrical connection.

Do not touch the unit, shower head, pipe or switch if an electric shock or tingling sensation is present. Stay away from the area and disconnect the supply only if it can be done safely from a suitable location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the water heater cause the RCCB to trip?

The RCCB may be detecting leakage current from the unit, wiring or a related connection. Testing is required to identify the actual location of the leakage.

Can I reset the MCB after the water heater trips?

Do not reset it repeatedly if the MCB continues to trip. Stop using the water heater and arrange an inspection before using the unit again.

Should the MCB be replaced with a higher rating?

This should not be decided without an inspection. The MCB rating must be suitable for the cable, circuit and unit requirements. Increasing the rating without proper assessment may leave the cable without suitable protection.

Does an electrical contractor repair the water heater unit?

An electrical contractor can inspect the supply, circuit, wiring, isolator and electrical protection. Internal unit faults should be referred to a water heater technician or the manufacturer’s service centre.

Identify the Cause Before Using the Unit Again

A water heater that repeatedly causes an electrical trip does not necessarily require immediate replacement of the unit or MCB. The cause may involve the equipment, wiring, connection, isolator or protection system.

Proper inspection helps determine the work required without replacing components based on assumptions.
