Electrical Cable Colour Codes Malaysia | Old and New Colours

Electrical wire colours are used to identify phase, neutral and earth conductors in an installation. Clear identification helps electrical inspection, connection and maintenance work to be carried out more systematically.

Malaysia is currently transitioning from the old cable colour code to the new colour code based on IEC 60445. Since both systems may be found within the same house or premises, the function of a cable should not be determined by its colour alone.

Comparison of old and new electrical cable colour codes in Malaysia

What Are Electrical Cable Colour Codes?

Cable colour codes are an identification system used to distinguish the function of each conductor. In an electrical installation, colours help identify phase, neutral and earth conductors before connections or tests are carried out.

However, colour identification is not a substitute for inspection using suitable electrical testing equipment. Old wiring, previous modifications or incorrectly connected cables may result in the cable colour not matching its actual function.

Old and New Cable Colour Codes in Malaysia

Energy Commission Directive No.11/2026 establishes the transition to new cable colours aligned with IEC 60445. The basic comparison is as follows:

Conductor function Old colour code New colour code
Phase Red, yellow and blue Brown, black and grey
Neutral Black Blue
Earth Green or green-yellow Green or green-yellow

Information about cable insulation and applications can be found in our guide to types of electrical cables.

Cable Colours for Single-Phase Wiring

Under the old colour code for single-phase wiring, the phase conductor is commonly red, neutral is black and earth is green or green-yellow.

Under the new colour code, the phase conductor is brown, neutral is blue and earth remains green or green-yellow. The most important change to note involves the black conductor because it may be neutral in an older installation but can represent one of the phases under the new three-phase colour code.

Cable Colours for Three-Phase Wiring

Under the old colour code, the three phases are identified using red, yellow and blue, while black is used for neutral. The new colour code replaces the phase colours with brown, black and grey, while blue is used for neutral.

  • L1: red under the old code and brown under the new code.
  • L2: yellow under the old code and black under the new code.
  • L3: blue under the old code and grey under the new code.
  • Neutral: black under the old code and blue under the new code.
  • Earth: green or green-yellow under both colour codes.

The phase sequence, identification and verification must still be confirmed using suitable testing methods. Cable colour alone does not confirm that a connection has been made correctly.

When Will the New Cable Colours Be Used?

Based on Energy Commission Directive No.11/2026, the transition is implemented according to the following dates:

  • From 1 January 2026, either the old or new colour code may be used for new wiring, wiring additions and electrical modification work.
  • From 1 January 2029, electrical wiring covered by the directive must comply with the new cable colour code.

This transition does not mean every older house must be completely rewired simply because it uses the old cable colours. Cable condition, installation safety and the actual scope of work should be inspected before deciding whether electrical rewiring is required.

Why Does a Black Wire Require Extra Attention?

Under the old colour code, black is used for neutral. Under the new three-phase colour code, black is used as one of the phase conductors. Therefore, assuming that every black wire is neutral can be dangerous.

This situation may occur when a new circuit is added to a house that still has older wiring. The function of every conductor must be identified through inspection, labelling and testing before any connection is made.

When Old and New Cable Colours Are Mixed

The Energy Commission directive requires installations containing both old and new colour codes to be clearly identified. Important requirements include:

  • new-colour cables added to an existing installation must be clearly marked with suitable and durable labels;
  • a warning label must be placed on the distribution board or main switchboard;
  • connections involving both colour codes must clearly display the word “AWAS”;
  • circuit drawings and connection charts must be updated after upgrading work.

Proper labelling helps electricians carrying out future inspections or maintenance recognise that two cable colour systems are present within the same installation.

Appliance Cord Colours and Fixed Wiring

Flexible cords used for electrical appliances commonly use brown for live, blue for neutral and green-yellow for earth. These colours may differ from older fixed wiring inside a house, which may still use red, black and green conductors.

This difference is often encountered when installing new lights, ceiling fans or appliances at an older electrical point. Connections should not be made simply by matching colours without first identifying the actual function of each conductor.

Do Cable Colours Indicate the Condition of Wiring?

No. Cable colours only assist with identification. They do not indicate the condition of the insulation, cable capacity or overall circuit safety. A cable that appears normal may still have a loose connection, damaged insulation or an unsuitable size for the connected load.

An inspection should consider the cable condition, circuit protection, accessory connections, earthing and electrical test results. For new installations, the basic planning requirements are explained in our house wiring guide.

What Should Homeowners Do?

Homeowners should not open the distribution board or attempt to test live conductors themselves. If the property contains old wiring, additional circuits or mixed cable colours, inform the electrical contractor before work begins.

Ensure that circuits are labelled, modifications are recorded and electrical work is carried out by a suitable party. If a house is being constructed or renovated, early planning through our electrical wiring service helps organise cable routes, circuit distribution and future maintenance access.

Electrical Cable Colour Code FAQs

What colour is the live wire in single-phase wiring?

Under the old colour code, the phase or live conductor is normally red. Under the new colour code, the single-phase conductor is brown. Its actual function must still be confirmed through inspection and testing.

Is a black wire live or neutral?

It depends on the colour code being used. Black is neutral under the old colour code but can be a phase conductor under the new three-phase colour code. Never identify a conductor by colour alone.

Must old wiring be replaced because its colours are different?

Not necessarily. The use of old cable colours alone does not mean the wiring is damaged. The insulation, connections, cable capacity and overall installation safety should be inspected before replacement is considered.

What colour is the earth wire?

The earth conductor uses green or green-yellow. This identification remains unchanged during the transition to the new cable colour system.

Recognise the Colours, but Never Rely on Assumptions

Cable colours help identify conductor functions, but they should not be used as the only method of identification. The transition to the new colour code makes inspection, testing and labelling particularly important when old and new wiring are present within the same installation.

Proper planning and accurate circuit records make future maintenance easier while reducing the risk of incorrect electrical connections.
